The body of a 79-year-old fisherman has been found at Omaha beach after he was reported missing this morning.

Police were told the man, who had taken his kayak to go out fishing at Omaha, had not returned about 10.50 this morning.

Police conducted a search including using the Eagle helicopter and found the body floating in the water.

The man was wearing a lifejacket and weather conditions were calm.

Police extended their sympathies and were supporting the man's family.

At this stage it appears that the man suffered a medical event, police said.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.
